I just got finished making snacks for the week.  I try to eat five times a day with a snack between breakfast and lunch and another one between lunch and dinner, especially before I begin teaching classes at the gym.  I spend some time on Sunday afternoons not only making snacks, but making some meals for the week, as well.  It really saves time during the week and keeps us from hitting vending machines and picking up food.

One of my favorite snacks right now is Oh She Glows Healthy Banana Cranberry Oat Bars.  I like to eat one as a mid-morning snack because they’re not only delicious, but because they keep me feeling full until lunch time.  The only change I’ve made to them is that I substitute dried blueberries instead of cranberries.  Blueberries are a superfood and an antioxidant.   They are also high in potassium and Vitamin C.  They not only can lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, but they are also an anti-inflammatory.  Inflammation in the body is behind a host of diseases.  What you eat has a direct impact on inflammation in the body and your health overall.

My afternoon snack before I hit the gym to teach classes is currently Chocolate Covered Katie’s Fudge Brownie Larabars.  These are full of healthy ingredients, but taste like you’re eating a candy bar!  They are made with dates, cocoa powder and walnuts. Dates are loaded with dietary fiber and are one of the best natural sources for potassium (even higher than bananas).  Potassium is important for muscle contraction, including smooth functioning of the heart.  In addition to these health benefits, dates are also energy boosters with natural sugars such as fructose, glucose and sucrose which your body can use quickly for a boost of energy. Great for that afternoon slump so many of us feel!  Walnuts are a source of omega-3 fats and alpha-linolenic acid which improve artery function.  Also, did I mention that there are health benefits to eating cocoa powder?  Cocoa powder is an antioxidant as well!

In just about a half hour’s time on Sunday afternoon, I am able to make two snacks that are packed with healthy ingredients!  Try one and let me know what you think!
